Comrades

Here are other websites and project we like and that are aligned with our mission. This is by nature an incomplete list. Many, many people are writing interesting things about games across the internet and in zines/small press projects. There is also some video stuff in this vein, while we focus on the written word. Still, we want to cite each other when we can, even and especially when we disagree. Sites and projects are listed in alphabetical order.

After Journey's End - Independent game developers writing about their own designs. Resisting the "good game design/bad game design" dichotomy and instead letting designers explain their hearts and minds.

Bulletpoints Monthly - Although the kinds of games Bulletpoints covers are very different from ours, we owe our structure entirely to them. The outlet's "book club" format allows for both in-depth and diverse criticism. No wonder we stole it.

Canon Fire - Amr Al-Aaser, who wrote for our first issue, writes about obscure video games, ranging from contemporary visual novels to retro shoot-'em-ups. Al-Aaser's fundamental respect for the nitty gritty absurdities of video games makes this a loving and delightful curative project.

Cartridge Lit - Showcasing literature inspired by video games, including not only nonfiction but fiction and poetry as well. As long as their contributors' work is willing to take risks and tempt edges (to use their terms), they care not if the games referenced are new or old.

Indiepocalypse - A wide-spanning project encompassing both development and crit. The main event is a monthly issue collecting small game projects, but there are physical media and podcasts to be found as well.

Into the Spine - One of the finest gaming blogs of its generation and still going strong. Currently publishing short form, poetic crit of games of every stripe.

Unwinnable - Long running, independent magazine of cultural criticism including (but not limited to) video games.

Vextro - Game jams and essays from critics and developers (and both). Delightful and inventive community space.

Videodame - Artwork, poetry, and criticism inspired by our medium of choice.

Warp Door - Video game curation, more deliberate and less overwhelming than the itch front page, but a similar energy.
